It all started with Richard Warren Sears, a rail road worker in Minnesota, who one day got a shipment of unwanted watches from a jeweler out of Chicago. Richard Sears purchased the watches and then sold them for a profit to other rail road workers. The watches became a hit and Richard Sears soon ordered more from the same jeweler. Soon, Richard Sears began a mail order business, selling the watches through catalogs by mail. Within a year’s time, he moved to Chicago and joined Alvah Roebuck in creating Sears, Roebuck and Co.

But things didn’t stop there. Richard Sears noticed that farmers who came to town purchased their supplies at high prices from the local stores. He began to publish his catalogs with prices in them, so that the shoppers knew what was being sold and at what price it was being sold for. This boosted his mail order catalog business even more. By 1888, the first official Sears catalog was published, with 322 pages being filled with all kinds of merchandise, including automobiles, sporting goods, bicycles and sewing machines.

In 2005, Sears merged with Kmart to become the modern day corporation it is now. The company started off as a mail order business and grew into the largest retailer in the U.S. by the twentieth century. Up until then, Sears was famously known for its catalogs, but due to competition and social changes, the catalog program was shut down.

Sears today now focuses on providing merchandise at physical store locations and also online. It provides consumers the flexibility of visiting a physical store to make purchases or to shop from the comfort of their own home, using the Internet. Use your coupons and save big with known and trusted Sears brands today!
